If you have decided to study a career, then you already have a certainty, now it remains to reveal other doubts, such as knowing how to access universities in your country, in this case what are the steps you should take in a admission process of a higher level institution in Colombia?

Admission to the universities of Colombia

Colombian Higher Education institutions have the freedom and sufficient autonomy to decree what requirements they demand of those who wish to study in them. But the truth is that as a general rule the State Exam will be one of the previous steps that every student must take before trying to enroll in any of these educational centers.

In the same way, the particular admission exams of each institution will be present, mainly in the most renowned and prestigious establishments, such as the National University of Colombia.

The personal interview and the specific tests by areas of study will be other steps to be taken in the admission process of various higher level institutions.

State Exam

The Colombian Institute for the Evaluation of Education (ICFES) is the entity in charge of evaluating Colombian education at all levels and, in this case, it is the commission that manages the State Exam, used as an access test for students. students from the intermediate level to the higher educational level.

The State Exam, today called test Know 11, is the oldest Colombian evaluation. Since 1968 it has been carried out as a method of entry to the Higher Education level and has been modified in content and structure on numerous occasions, the last of its changes coming into effect in the second semester of 2014, when the exam will cease to be available. made up of the Common Core (8 compulsory tests) and the Flexible Component (in-depth or interdisciplinary test), to go on to consist of 5 compulsory tests.

How is access to universities in Colombia?

The Saber 11 tests are focused on 5 areas of knowledge: Critical Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and English. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and open questions, while the stipulated time that each student will have to solve it will be a day of two sessions of four and a half hours.

This State Exam is carried out by high school students, whether they have completed their studies in previous years or are finishing high school, in which case, the student’s enrollment in Saber 11 will be at the expense of the school itself.

This test can be repeated several times, in order to obtain better results, since the score obtained in it is a selection criterion in the majority of higher level institutions in Colombia.

In this sense, each entity has the autonomy to dictate the minimum score that the student had to achieve in the exam to be admitted, however, the higher scores will always have greater possibilities.

Similarly, the Know 11 has no validity limit, so that no matter what year you took the exam, your score can be taken into account. Of course, as in the previous case, each institution defines its own selection criteria based on the date of the exam, so you will have to consult this detail at the institution where you want to enroll.

Admission Test

Although all Colombian institutions of Higher Education must require applicants to their study programs to present the Saber 11 test, because this is what the law dictates, the truth is also that not all have as their sole selection criteria the grade obtained in said exam.

In some cases, such as that of the National University of Colombia, although the State Exam is required and certified within the admission requirements, in addition, future students are asked to take the institution’s own exam.

This kind of test varies from one educational center to another, but in general terms it has many similarities to the one taken by the ICFES.

In the admission exam, the main areas of study are addressed, such as Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Arts, consisting of multiple-choice questions and other in-depth ones.

Personal interview

Another of the alternatives to avoid, when going through an admission process in higher level institutions in Colombia, is the personal interview.

In this case, the interview usually acts as a complement to other factors of interest to the institution, such as the score obtained in the State Exam, added to the grades achieved by the student in high school.

Specific tests by study areas

In different centers of Higher Education in Colombia, the direct admission of new students who pass a certain score in the Saber 11 tests is allowed. However, those same institutions, in certain careers or areas of study, request that the student take an admission exam . These are specific tests that only apply in certain study programs.

General entry requirements to the Colombian Higher Education level

In Colombia, there are only two requirements to meet if you want to enter a study program within the Higher Education system: have completed secondary school and have taken the State Exam.

In the first case, the requirement is to have a bachelor’s degree and in the second, only have presented the Saber 11 test evaluated by the ICFES, in which case, the score obtained will be the entrance door to the higher level.

Documentation to present to enroll in a university in Colombia

Like any other administrative procedure, to enroll in universities and other higher-level educational centers you will have to present a series of documents.

The documentation that institutions usually request are:

  • Identification document.
  • 2 3×4 photos.
  • Certificate of certified bachelor’s degree.
  • Certificate of score obtained in the State Exam.
  • Application for registration duly signed.
