Architecture is the art, science, and business of urbanization. Architects create houses, office towers, schools, and churches.

Interview with Ana Belén, Architect UBA Argentina.

Why study Architecture?

Architecture is a passion, a vocation, as well as a science and a business. It has been described as a social art and also an ingenious science. The architecture must be of the highest quality of design. Architecture offers, in the words of Marco Vitruvius, the great Roman architect and historian, “firmness, comfort and pleasure”.

Architecture provides a sense of location and the support of all kinds of human activity. Architecture helps man-made adjustment in harmony with the environment and promoting health and well-being, enriching aesthetic and spiritual life, providing economic opportunities, and creating a legacy that reflects and symbolizes culture and traditions.

What kind of people might this profession be interested in? How to find out if Architecture is the perfect career for me?

Architects are talented individuals with a flair for design, an understanding of social trends, a business sense of smell, strong engineering skills, and an understanding of the law. To enter the Bachelor of Architecture it is recommended to have these qualities: be creative; possess reading comprehension; be communicative with people; have leadership; be organized and regulated for self-study; possess a level of understanding of English; be honest and responsible, humanistic, critical, supportive and enterprising.

What type of work does a professional of the Bachelor of Sociology do? What is the scope of the race?

Today’s architect can work alone or be part of a small, medium or large company. Some architects are self-employed. Others may be salaried employees, whether they are government employees, real estate developers, or large corporations.

Architecture is about the provision of professional services in relation to city planning, design, construction, expansion, conservation, restoration or alteration of a property or group of buildings. These professional services include, but are not limited to:

  1. The planning and organization of the territory;
  2. Urban design;
  3. The presentation of designs, sketches, plans, etc .;
  4. Coordination of technical documentation prepared by others (engineers, urban planners and other specialized consultants) as appropriate and without limitations;
  5. The economics of construction;
  6. The management of contracts;
  7. Construction supervision;
  8. The administration of the projects.

The most basic definition of an architect is a professional capable of designing and providing advice -both aesthetic and technical- regarding objects built in cities. But this definition barely covers the surface of the role of an architect.

Why study Architecture?

Perhaps it would be better to describe architects as conductors who orchestrate and take the initiative in reconciling the objectives of a building or other structure. Architects provide solutions through the use of:

  • Artistic imagination and creative vision to design spaces where their ideas and techniques, represented through light, textures, materials and colors, are combined to satisfy our aesthetic, spiritual and cultural needs;
  • Practical and technical knowledge to create spaces that are safe, effective, sustainable, and meet economic needs and interpersonal skills, psychological understanding and the ethical practice of designing spaces that meet the complex and sometimes contradictory needs of clients and the community.
