Why study Criminalistics? | I do not know what to study

The Criminal Sciences are in charge of studying criminal acts, their environment, their protagonists and their motives. The objective of the degree is to train professionals capable of dealing with a complex reality that requires analytical and investigative capacity consistent with current needs.

Lucrecia has a degree in Criminalistics from a private university. He will tell us what he does and what it was like to study this degree.

? What led you to study Criminalistics?

“It’s rare for a 17-year-old girl to choose such a career, actually. I remember that it was a long process to make the decision; I crossed out options until there were only Law and this left, but the first one seemed very conventional and boring. What is positive is that it is a profession in which the capacity for wonder is never exhausted. Of course: it is not suitable for impressionable or sensitive people.

? What does your job consist of?

? I work with the Provincial Police, in a team made up of Doctors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Lawyers and Criminologists. We take care of investigating crimes from all possible aspects, therefore we do it interdisciplinary, until we find the data that allow those in charge of doing it to formulate possible hypotheses about the fact. We are in contact with the crime scene, with the evidence and with the bodies, if any, that is why I said earlier that it is not a profession suitable for impressionable people.

? What is the occupational field of the Criminologist?

It is quite concise. A Bachelor of Criminology can serve in law enforcement, state security, or as a private investigator. However, there are not enough free positions; Many times, the newcomers to the career believe that they will have a good time at the end, but the reality is that they end up underemployed in any other position. It took me almost five years to work in my profession, and even so my salary is not very good.

? Would you recommend future university students to choose this career?

? Yes, as long as they are convinced that it really attracts them, precisely because of what it counted before the lack of occupation. It is an exciting career, very interesting things are studied, but it is undeniable that afterwards the limited field of application hurts. Personally, I do not regret having chosen her, but I recognize that not everyone seeks only intellectual satisfaction in their profession. In addition, the lack of opportunities in our career is a worldwide problem, so it is not an alternative solution to migrate to another country.

? What do you like the most about Criminalistics?

? The social collaboration that it implies. When the expert opinions are not well carried out, or the aim is to incriminate innocent people, injustice grows, the sentences of people who should be free and the freedom of criminals, fostering a criminal, concealing and complicit society. However, with the collaboration of serious and responsible professionals, committed to their work, this does not happen or significantly diminishes, favoring justice and, therefore, the entire community.
