Catalonia, Madrid, Galicia and the Basque Country maintain the calls for this year, as reported by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training
Only Catalonia, the Community of Madrid, Galicia and the Basque Country leave open the possibility of carrying them out in 2020, “Without prejudice to the fact that circumstances may advise modifying this decision,” details the Ministry led by Isabel Celaá, who has met with the regional councils to decide this week what to do with the oppositions.
“The educational administrations have valued the circumstances created by the impact of COVID-19 both in strictly sanitary terms and in the effect they may have had on people immersed in these selective processes, “the statement reads.
Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Valencian Community, Euskadi, Extremadura, La Rioja and Murcia are the communities that will postpone the call in process until 2021.
Likewise, the Ministry affirms that, “although the autonomous communities have full powers to convene the selection processes, the maximum agreement and various contacts have been maintained with them to define their positions. “
The teacher unions, in disagreement with the decision
The decision of the regional administrations to postpone teaching competitions until 2021 contrasts with what the teachers’ unions had demanded previously: to close an agreement with all the communities so that the competitions, to which 260,000 applicants will be presented for a total of 27,789 places, be held on the same dates in the whole of Spain.
The Central Sindical Independiente y de Servants (CSIF) had demanded that “not a single position be lost among those planned” and that “a common date to hold the oppositions“, through a statement dated March 31, 2020.
In Catalonia the teaching competitions will be held in September
The Department of Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya has announced for its part that the convocation of teaching competitions this year will take place in September 2020.
The The selection process was to begin on June 13 and to have finished before November 30 with the resolution of the competition, with which those approved could have a fixed place as of September 2022.
“The forecast is maintained to make the call for positions for the stabilization of interim positions during the years 2020, 2021 and 2022. The Department wants, in this way, to give security to applicants and to dispel the uncertainties around the realization of the oppositions and do them safely coming back from summer“, says the Generalitat in a statement.
For their part, majority unions, the Unió de Sindicats de Treballadors / es de l’Ensenyament de Catalunya (USTEC STEs) and the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) have rejected the new proposal to call for competitive examinations and have demanded a merit contest, which “favors the real consolidation of the temporary teaching staff”, or carry over the tests until July 2021.
The Madrid oppositions remain if the state of alarm is not prolonged
While the Madrid’s community has announced that it intends to celebrate this year the selection process for teaching staff called for 2020, points out that this could change if the state of alarm for the coronavirus beyond April 11.
“If such an extension were to occur, the process would be postponed, which would be held in 2021, in the same period that was planned for this year (between April and July 2021),” explains the Ministry of Education and Youth of the Community of Madrid in a statement.
It has also stressed that the number of places and specialties called would be maintained “in published terms to correspond with the planning carried out and to transmit confidence to the system and tranquility to future opponents.”
