If you have the possibility to carry out your university studies in any of top 10 universities in the world, you will be interested to know that five of them are in Europe: four universities in the United Kingdom and one in Switzerland are in the top 10 of the QS World University Ranking 2020.

The University of Oxford leads the list of the best university centers in Europe and occupies the fourth position in the international ranking, while the ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in Switzerland, it ranks second among the best European universities and sixth in the world.

The University of Cambridge, University College London and Imperial College London they occupy the third, fourth and fifth place at the European level, and in the global classification they are in the seventh, eighth and ninth position.

The ranking, carried out by the international consultancy in higher education, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluates the top 1,000 universities in 82 countries under six indicators, ranging from academic reputation to the research that is done.

Although five British universities occupy the first places of the top 10 of the ranking and a total of 18 in the top 100, UK centers have performed worse than other years in the rankings, since the number of international students has decreased, this being an indicator that is analyzed. This is probably due to the imminent application of Brexit, according to QS Quacquarelli Symonds in a statement.

Only three Spanish universities in the top 200 of the QS 2020 ranking

The University of Barcelona (UB), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) are the the only Spanish universities that are among the top 200 in the world, according to the QS World University Ranking 2020.

The UB ranks first among the best university centers in the country and 165th worldwide, improving its position compared to the previous year, when it ranked second in Spain and 166th in the world, behind the UAM.

For its part, the UAB is placed in second place at the Spanish level, when last year it was third. It is also ranked 188th in the world ranking, five points higher than its global position in the previous edition of the ranking.

While the Catalan universities mentioned have improved their position in the ranking, the UAM It has made it worse: from occupying the first position in the list of the best Spanish universities, it has gone on to position itself in third. Globally, the same thing also happens, since the Madrid university had the 159th place in the 2019 ranking and in the new 2020 edition it ranks 192.

Overall, a total of 14, among the 27 Spanish universities that appear in the QS World University Ranking 2020, down positions compared to last year, according to the results of the study. This decline in university centers in Spain is mainly due to the lack of research, as well as appointments per professor, according to the ranking.

Data sheet

The final score for each university that appears in the ranking is based on six indicators that are weighted differently:

  • Academic reputation, based on surveys of 70,000 experts in higher education (40%)
  • Reputation of employability of graduates, according to a questionnaire to 44,000 employers on the relationship between the institution and employability (10%)
  • The teacher-student ratio, that is, the number of students divided by the number of teachers, thus giving an orientation on the size of the classes of each institution (20%)
  • Citations produced during the last 5 years by the members of the institution (20%)
  • The international faculty / international student body ratio, which measures the proportion of foreign students in an institution (5%).

If you are interested in pursuing your university studies in Europe, consider other aspects beyond the rankings to know how to choose a university, such as the degrees offered, the teaching staff, the number of students per class, etc.
