What is an interior designer?

An interior designer is someone who works with a client to create aesthetic rooms and spaces. Clients range from homeowners to large corporations. The spaces and rooms that interior designers create are equally varied, ranging from indoor and outdoor home environments to hotel hallways and luxurious mansions. No matter the size, every interior designer works to create spaces that are both attractive and functional. Spaces must also be secure while meeting specific customer needs.

An interior designer is usually an independent contractor who must build a client base. In some cases, a designer will work for a larger company. In either case, you must excel in order to build a positive reputation in the industry and secure future work.

The Interior designer currently promotes the recognition of healthy spaces and buildings.

What does an interior designer do?

An interior designer creates interior spaces that meet the client’s needs for aesthetics, safety, and functionality. By using furniture placement, color palettes, decor, and functional décor, you’ll create kitchens that are beautiful yet functional and theater entrances that convey the excitement of a blockbuster movie, while ensuring the safety of the crowd. Items such as artwork, lighting, window treatments, and flooring must work together to contribute to an overall appearance that meets the customer’s needs.

An interior designer can specialize in commercial or residential design or participate in both. Two new and emerging areas of interior design are green design and ergonomic design. In ergonomic design, designers work to create spaces, especially work environments, that contribute to good posture for employees confined to offices for most of the day. For workers, designers create spaces and work areas that will result in reduced muscle tension. Eco-design incorporates the use of renewable, recycled or energy efficient elements to create a more environmentally friendly space.

What is the workplace of an interior designer like?

Interior designers need to have flexible working hours and varied work environments. Schedules are often tailored to the needs of their clients, and interior designers usually travel to the client’s home or business to discuss plans for the design of the space. After an initial consultation and a few brainstorming sessions, designers visit stores to purchase furniture, artwork, and supplies to create the desired space.

Most interior designers also rent or own office space, with meeting rooms for the client and the interaction of the design team, as well as a reception area, office and design area for the creation of interior elements. Although not necessary for a freelance designer, an office gives clients the impression of professional service. A positive impression can contribute to your overall success in the design business.
